When you look around at what’s happening globally on a number of fronts, you might ask yourself what the heck is going on?
We are in the midst of record-setting heatwaves and devastating fires caused by climate change; we are grappling with the fallout of a global pandemic, anti-vaxxers and huge numbers of the global population with no hope of a vaccination anytime soon; we have powerful billionaires controlling more of the world’s resources and related global power (Amazon creator Jeff Bezos made an additional $75 billion during the pandemic) highlighting the ever-growing disparity between the super-wealthy and the rest of us; and, we have examples of racism and hate plaguing our society in the forms of Islamophobia and anti-Indigenous genocide past and present.
In such dark times, what are you to do?
My answer may not surprise you: do your daily practice.
I’ll get to “what” practice you should be doing in a moment.
I want to share with you something I learned through my yoga studies that helps me put the realities we are facing into perspective. The state of the world can be overwhelming. But it need not be.
In Yogic Astronomy there are four ages known as “yugas” that last for thousands of years. Most agree that we are in Kali Yuga - an age characterized by darkness.
Kali Yuga is evident because our world is run by fear and doubt, divisive forces are in full swing, and anger and violence dictate our behaviour.
This period of dark forces offers a great opportunity, provided you are vigilant about your place and role in the world.
So, how can you transcend the heaviness of what you are living through now? How can you conquer the negative and destructive forces within you and in the larger world?
To my earlier point, it’s about Investing your effort in practice, prana, and pilgrimage. Let’s set pilgrimage aside for now and look at practice and prana.
For practice to achieve the goal of elevating you above the heaviness of the world, it needs to be the right practice for you. My membership program includes hundreds of practices to choose from to achieve the right mix.

Effectively, you become the change you want to see. This harkens back to Gandhi’s yogic teachings.
Don’t get caught up in the ugliness of what’s going on. It can lead to feelings of powerlessness. This is not the case. You do have power. You do have agency. You can choose how you want to be in the world.
